AUGUST 28th

Waldorf Education (Steiner Education) is the education system based on student’s freedom, art, and creation. Rudolf Steiner was born in Balkans, and the education began in Germany. He devised it in 1919. 14 years later, the Nazis gained a political power in Germany. Then all the domestic private schools become the Nation’s schools, and all the Waldorf schools were liquidated. After World War Ⅱ, especially after 1970s, the number of Waldorf schools increased. That’s why it gained popularity through many lectures and books.

There are 8 Waldorf schools in Japan, and more than 1000 schools in 91 countries around the world (April, 2015).Germany has the largest number of school followed by America. In America, California is known as the area where it’s active for the Alternative education. So there are a lot of public Waldorf schools.

I picked up two examples of Waldorf education to explain how it’s spread all over the world. The Waldorf education came to Russia when the president Gorbachev improved the Russian education system. For example, there is the Moscow Waldorf School Nr.1060 in Russia. It was certified as a public school in 1996, and there are about 400 students now. In another example, Panyotai Waldorf School is a popular school in Thailand. It was established by Porn Panosot in 1996. He was a doctor, but he quit the job to get qualification of Waldorf school teacher because there were no schools he wanted to send his son.

Waldorf education has changed a little to fit the present-day world. For example, there is the San Francisco Waldorf School in America. It is said that the Waldorf education system makes a difference in an academic achievement compared to general schools. However, this school is recognized as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC is one of the academic bodies, and it’s for the accreditation of schools. Students over eighteen, who complete the accredited school of WASC have a qualification for admission to a university.

Waldorf education is an artistic education, also an open education. The supports for students with disabilities are highly regarded. It is born from the mutual exchange between human and human. Rudolf Steiner said, “The education must not be a science. It must be an art.”

July 31st

I learned about the Japanese garden in my school, and I visited one garden in Kyoto.
Ogawa Jihee (小川治兵衛) is a representative garden master of Meiji period who completed 池泉回遊式庭園 (Style of garden that features a path around a pond). He was born in Kyoto in 1860, and died in 1933. He married when he was 18 years old, and he was the adopted son of Ogawa family. Ogawa family’s job was a professional gardener that specialized in planting trees. So, Jihee was also called Ueji (植治). The Chinese character “植” means “planting trees,” and “治” is the same character as his name. He designed a lot of famous gardens such as the Heian Jingu , Maruyama Park, and Murinan.
The characteristics of the gardens he designed represents the Japanese modernization. For example, there is the philosopher’s path in Kyoto, and it is along the Lake Biwa Canal. The Lake Biwa Canal is a driving force of modernizing Kyoto. Jihee used the water in his garden, so it is a symbol of the modern Japanese culture. Also, during the Edo period, people enjoyed designing a garden and watching the movement of water. As the time passed, the flow of water became a stronger element in the design of a garden during the Meiji period. Then, Jihee used the flow of water in his gardens, and it became the modern beauty of his gardens. Murinan is one example which incorporates the flow of water into the garden design.
I visited Namikawa Cloisonne Museum of Kyoto which is a former residence of Namikawa Yasuyuki. His profession is making Shippou which is called the enamel in English.
The garden in his house was designed by Jihee in 1894, and it is the first garden using Lake Biwa Canal. The water was for polishing Shippou. There is a big stone at the center of the lake, and it is shapes
d like a turtle. The shape of the lake is like a crane. These animals are said to bring good fortune. Also, there are many different stones in the garden. The Yagura stone is from Shiga prefecture, the Kurama stone and the Kibune stone is from Kyoto, and the Blue stone is from Wakayama. They are very big and valuable. There are also 13 lanterns . All the lanterns’ hole are facing to the Yasuyuki’s house because the hole is for the light to pass through.
I learned that the gardens Jihee designed are the representation of the modern Japanese society. He shows the Japanese society in those eras through his gardens.

SLEEPING CUT MAN.
